A
Growing Need
Although Madison
has a reputation for being one of the nation’s most desirable places to
live, not all manage to find prosperity here:
• In Dane
County, 9.4% of the population – some 38,300 people – lives below the poverty
line.
• The poverty
rate in the city of Madison is 15%, surpassing the national average of
12.7%.
• At 30%, Dane
ranks first among Wisconsin counties in the percentage of tenants paying
at least 35% of their income for rent.
• Over 11.5% of
non-elderly adults in Dane County have a
disability – significantly increasing their risk of experiencing hunger
and food insecurity.
• More than 6.5%
of people in Dane County receive food stamps.
These factors combine to strain the capacity of
St. Vincent de Paul’s Service
Center, crowd our reception and waiting areas, impinge on client privacy, and
dramatically increase use of our center’s food pantry.
For all of these
reasons and many more, the
need for hope and services from St. Vincent de Paul has
never been greater |
