Video by Edgewood College students with FACTv help Since 2008, a metal shed across the street from our Madison service center has securely stored belongings of people who are homeless. Within Vinny’s Lockers, those who have a referral from a local agency that serves persons who are homeless may store some of what they own and aren’t in a position to carry with them. Personal papers, family mementos, out-of-season clothing, and even tools of a trade find safe space here.
Since St. Vincent de Paul opened Vinny’s Lockers in 2008, up to 75 persons at a time – about 180 over the course of a year – have stored and accessed belongings through this free program. Each participant in this program is supplied up to two storage bins and may store documents in a secure file. Those making use of this program agree to check in within 60 days of storing items; storage may then be extended. Food, weapons and drugs are not accepted. Volunteers staff Vinny’s Lockers for scheduled Wednesday and Saturday hours. Please call the number listed above before visiting Vinny’s Lockers to store or access belongings.
“I can be at peace of mind for the things that I can’t carry with me, or I can’t keep around anyone else. So they’re here. They’re safe. I don’t have to worry about them.”
